Best Remote Control Helicopter for the Enthusiast and Hobbyist

Remote Control helicopters resemble real helicopters but in miniature, and follow the same laws of aerodynamics. However, you don’t need a pilot’s licence to fly one – and they don’t need a lot of storage space!

Remote Control Helicopter FAQ:

Q: How far from the transmitter will they fly?
A: Transmitters broadcast a signal up to approx 2 miles.

Q: What speed can they achieve?
A: From 40 mph up to 90 mph.

Q: Are helicopters more complicated to fly than airplanes?
A: They are more complicated to fly than airplanes, but you can learn slowly because you can fly them a short distance and then land them.

Remote Control Helicopter Types:

Toy (single rotor and coaxial) Not Remote Control

Toy helicopters are not remote control, but are included here by way of explanation. Toy helicopters are cheaper and easier to fly, and will take more punishment until you learn to fly them! One main rotor plus tail rotor means that they have no cyclic control; they cannot hover, fly sideways, or fly backwards. They will, however, survive most of your mistakes. They can only be flown indoors because they are Infra red not remote control.

Micro Coaxial

Coaxial helicopters have two main rotors in a stack. They have full cyclic control and can hover, fly forwards, backwards, and sideways.

Quadrocopters

The RC Quadrocopter or quad rotor RC helicopter can take off vertically, hover, and fly in all directions. It has 4 propellers arranged in cross configuration. Although unconventional in appearance, they are easy to fly.

Fixed Pitch Helicopter

This is the angle of the blade with in the horizontal plane. A fixed pitch helicopter has its main rotor blades in a fixed position. This makes them simpler to fly as there is less to control. Fixed pitch helicopters achieve lift through rotor speed.

True Single Rotor Collective Pitch

Collective pitch helicopters are more complex to fly. They can fly in any direction or perform acrobatic loops, rolls, turns and even fly upside down.

Choosing a Remote Control Helicopter

In order to pick the right helicopter for you to fly, you will need to ask yourself a few important questions:

Am I willing to spend time and money rebuilding my helicopter each time it crashes?

Do I want to start with a simple robust helicopter?

Do I want to fly helicopters outdoors?

Do I want a helicopter that will allow me to ‘grow’ into it?

The answers to these questions will determine if you just want a toy helicopter to fly indoors or if you intend to spend time and money and invest in an absorbing hobby.

Looking After Your Helicopter:

  • Clean and inspect your helicopter after each flight.
  • Allow the Helicopter to cool for 15 – 30 mins before recharging the battery. This will prolong the battery life.
  • Look for any sign of damage – do not fly it until repaired.
  • Small tears can be repaired with strong tape, but important and delicate parts should be replaced.
  • Never repair rotors; the balance may be impaired – always replace them
  • Remember to charge batteries before flights.

Practicing on a flight simulator without crashes!

Practicing on a Flight Simulator that recreates the flying experience can help you gain confidence and understanding without the unavoidable crashes. Flight simulators can often support an real RC transmitter, enabling a user to practice with the controller without worrying about making mistakes. Anticipating problems with a flight simulator can cut your learning time letting you gain experience quicker than using the RC Helicopter alone.

Once you have mastered basic takeoff and landing, try a few maneuvers and learn to recover from mistakes. Make your mistakes with the flight simulator, and you’ll spend less time repairing your helicopter!
